The Costa de Almeria runs east of Almeria City and includes the Cabo de Gata-Nijer Natural Park, Carboneras, Mojacar, Garrucha, Vera Playa, Palomares, Villaricos to San Juan de los Terreros. These are the coastal areas covered by VIP Almeria.

Carboneras is a beautiful coastal town. It is beside Cabo de gata's Natural park which is one of the best in Almería. Carboneras has also the "Playa de los muertos" which is one of the famous beaches in all of Spain.

Situated in the south east of the Province of Almeria (Andalucía) in southern Spain and on the Mediterranean coast, Carboneras is one of the larger municipality in the province (Levante region), with approx 8,000 inhabitants. It is famous for its fishing tradition, the Moors and Christians festivals, and stunning natural environment.

Why Carboneras?

Whist it is popular, it is not overly touristed and doesn’t have those “Benidorm” style drunken crowds. The area is perfect for family holidays with safe beaches for the kids and lots of activities for adults.

There are over 30 restaurants in the town and apart from a few Italian Restaurants, the majority specialise in the fish brought in by the local boats.

The typical gastronomic menus in this area consist of dishes such as the Carboneras prawn, which has an intense flavour anda  species of razor fish (galanes) that is caught in the surrounding waters and is not found anywhere else.

Perhaps the greatest draw for visitors is the incredibly straight beach of Playa de los Muertos. It is over a kilometre in length between two cliffs so not ideal for people with mobility issues. The sea is a sapphire blue and great for snorkelling. Access is approx a 20 minute hike down but well worth it.

Most of the beaches and waters in the Cabo de Gata offer fantastic snorkelling. There are underwater rock formations just next to Los Escullos beach as well as caves which are particularly stunning or by land hiking, try the beach Salinas which stretches from the Tower of San Miguel to the Cape with its lighthouse. It is the largest beach of the Natural Park and worth exploring.

For families, Playa el Playazo, San Miguel Beaches offer easy access, lots of sand for the kids to play in and pure beautiful waters that are quite shallow.

Where to Move:

Las Marinicas close to port of Carboneras offers larger possibilities for newer buildings  as there is urban land available to purchase / Detached villas.

Terraced houses can be found in the medium price range at the Playa de los Cocones.

Playa de Los Barquicos is a popular area and values vary depending on the sea view to Isla de San Andres.

The town centre to Playa del Lancón tends to have alot more holiday homes, lock up and leave units.

The Cost: “Really anywhere in Spain so it is a lifestyle choice, a single could live comfortably on €1,200 — or less. A couple can live for around €2,000 a month. Eating out at Restaurants is inexpensive as are childcare, groceries transportation and sport and leisure club membership/activities.

Carboneras has a population of 7,750 people.

A Cinematic Location

On August 7th 2013 in Carboneras a bronze sculpture depicting actor Peter O'Toole as “Lawrence of Arabia” was unveiled which stands in the square next to the tourist office.

Lawrence of Arabia was shot in 1962 starring Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Omar Sharif and Anthony Quayle amongst many other film stars.

The film crew built a replica of the Jordanian town of Aqaba complete with 300 houses and a mosque. There was over 400 extras employed from Carboneras and the surrounding areas which every local knows someone that played a part.

Later productions shot in the area include an episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the film, ‘How I Won The War’ starring John Lennon.

The Andalusian province of Almería has staked its claim in the international film history, as a cinematic location.

A stretch of the street poet Villaespesa is called Walk of Fame Almería, which pays tribute to the actors and leading filmmakers who have worked in the province such as John Lennon who was starred in the film, ‘How I Won The War’ .

Patrick Wayne, Omar Sharif, Ridley Scott, Denis O´Dell, Ángela Molina, Terry Gullian and Arnold Schwarzenegger, are among the names shown in these stars of fame.

In 1989, the Andalusian Regional Government issued a decree that the landscapes around Nijar and Tabernas should be protected for the use of the film industry.

The Tabernas Desert was the film location for Once Upon a Time in the West, Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia and Exodus to name a few.
